The Japanese term “manga” (literally “derisive images”) in its homeland is generally used to indicate all comics regardless of the target, the themes and the nationality of origin. Outside of Japan, however, the choice to print the books with the pages inside is one of the peculiarities of these productions black and white, a choice made to save money compared to color prints.

The manga boom occurred in the 1950s, a period in which it became one of the main sectors of the Japanese publishing industry. The growth continues today, for example the years 2007 and 2009 experienced market growth of more than 400 billion yen.

Over the years it has been exported outside Japan, finding a sort of “second home” in Europe and the Middle East and North America comes immediately below.

The works are initially published in specialized magazines (Weekly Shonen Jump, Weekly Shonen Sunday, Weekly Shonen Magazine, V Jump, Saikyo Jump, etc.) in single chapters, only when certain targets are reached are they subsequently released in Tankobon format, the classic books that contain multiple chapters.

You too can enter this varied world suitable for everyone, find your favorite work and fall in love with its characters!
